T-Team’s captain fell to the ground three minutes into the match against Kelantan.
The club’s chief executive said the player suffered a heart attack and did not receive medical attention in time.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver been alert,” Syahrizan Mohd Zain told the New Straits Times. “The driver was at the stands watching the game when Oniya suddenly collapsed and our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.
The game was abandoned after the team received word that Oniya had died.
“The game had just started for about two or three minutes. Suddenly, he collapsed,” Kelantan’s Amiridzwan Taj Tajuddin told The Star.
Oniya began his professional career in Azerbaijan before moving to Uzbekistan in 2007.
He was in his first season with T-Team in the Malaysian Premier League after joining the squad in March.
